Prometheus Sailing Varsity Regatta Prepares to Set Sail
Crews from Cambridge University Yacht Club and Oxford University Yacht Club are preparing to race against each other at the Prometheus Sailing Varsity Regatta 2023.
The 2023 Varsity Regatta is sponsored by the leading UK charter company Prometheus Sailing and will be staged over the weekend of 15-16th July on the Solent. The teams from Oxford and Cambridge will sail on perfectly matched Sunsail 41 monohull yachts from Prometheus Sailing’s Portsmouth base in Port Solent Marina.
The two-day Prometheus Sailing Varsity Regatta will participate in a day of the Sunsail Racing series, as well as a day of match racing between the two crews.
In addition to being crowned the Varsity Regatta 2023 champions, the winning crew will also receive bottles of Mermaid Gin from the award-winning Isle of Wight Distillery.
As part of the new relationship between Prometheus Sailing and the Oxford and Cambridge University Yacht Clubs, students will benefit from special rates for RYA sailing courses with Prometheus Sailing and will also be offered job opportunities to crew the Prometheus Sailing fleet at events such as Cowes Week 2023.
Simon Boulding, Managing Director of Prometheus Sailing, commented:
“We are delighted to welcome the Varsity Regatta to the Prometheus Sailing fleet this year and look forward to seeing if Oxford or Cambridge prevail and gain the prestigious honour of the Prometheus Sailing Varsity Regatta champions of 2023. We also look forward to working closely with the yacht clubs to offer their members RYA training courses and crewing opportunities for students on our modern fleet of yachts in 2023 and beyond.”
Callum Henderson, Cambridge University Yacht Club Commodore, commented:
“CUYC Racing has had an ambitious year, pioneering a new offshore race project with all-student crew, and we are thrilled to conclude our season with this fantastic event organised in partnership between Cambridge and Oxford University Yacht Clubs and Prometheus Sailing. Prometheus have been extremely forthcoming to the two clubs' vision to create a unique and competitive event and we are extremely excited to return to the Sunsail 41 fleet for what promises to be a challenging and rewarding Regatta."
Rory Fleminger, Oxford University Yacht Club Commodore, commented:
“We are really looking forward to having Varsity as part of the Prometheus Sailing regatta this year. Lots of effort has been put into making it a special event. Racing in the Sunsail 41 fleet is always very competitive with the matched boats. And, whilst we wish Cambridge all the best, Oxford will be working hard to retain the trophy this year.”
