RYA Competent Crew Course

What we say…

What it says on the tin! At the end of five days you won’t believe how much you’ve learned to become an RYA Competent Crew. You don’t need any previous experience, although people often find it helpful to have looked at the Competent Crew Handbook prior to joining.

However you approach it, your instructor will show you the ropes (quite literally) and get you sailing, manoeuvring, handling lines and rowing a dinghy. You will:

  • learn to helm (steer) the boat on all points of sail (wherever the wind is coming from)
  • get experienced at tacking (nothing to do with sewing)
  • learn about gybing (not to be confused with gibing)
  • try running before the wind (which doesn’t actually require you to run!)

All the key sailing moves, so that you have the confidence to go on to the next stage.

NEXT STEPS

Want to take your sailing further after your Competent Crew course? Try to gain some further sailing experience. Rather like after you get your driving licence - get out there an enjoy sailing. You can join a sailing club, join friends on a flotilla holiday or sign up on yacht sailing and crew search apps too. Then the next step is to progress to the RYA Day Skipper practical and theory courses where you take charge of the boat.
