The Sail Collective Taster Weekend

28 June 2025

Prometheus Sailing, one of the UK's leading Royal Yachting Association (RYS) sailing schools, is delighted to launch this new initiative to encourage a greater level of participation in the sport of sailing from the black and Asian communities.

As part of our ongoing commitment to our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy, together with the industry’s efforts in broadening the demographic footprint within sailing, we are excited to announce we are launching our new ‘Sail Collective’ initiative which is aimed at offering sailing opportunities to ethnic diverse groups in the Portsmouth, Southampton and wider communities in London and the South East.

We have teamed up with one of our regular freelance RYA Sailing Instructors, Lloyd Guthrie, who is of mixed Caribbean heritage, who has agreed to help champion this initiative and will assist us with developing this exciting new pathway into sailing.

The aim is to offer some half day sailing sessions on the weekend 28-29 June 2025 at a zero cost.  Future, follow-on opportunities, and alternative funding discussions, are being explored with local organisations with a view to making this a regular and sustainable opportunity for all, with subsidised sailing opportunities in 2025 and beyond.

We will be staging 4, half day, sailing trips on the weekend of 28-29th June, from the Prometheus Sailing base in Port Solent Marina. If you are interested in applying for a single, couple, or family place, please use the contact button on this webpage, or email Simon Boulding using the email address at the bottom of this event page.

The 4 half day sessions will run as follows:

  • Session 1 - 0900hrs - 1230hrs Saturday 28th June
  • Session 2 - 1300hrs - 1630hrs Saturday 28th June
  • Session 3 - 0900hrs - 1230hrs Sunday 29th June
  • Session 4 - 1300hrs - 1630hrs Sunday 29th June

All safety equipment and wet weather gear will be provided by Prometheus Sailing. You will need to come dressed in simple, everyday clothing, such as trainers, jogging bottoms, t-shirts and sweat shirts. You need no previous sailing experience to take part in these taster sailing trips.

Participants are not required to be able to swim.

Your skipper for the day, Lloyd, will welcome you and provide a full safety and sailing briefing before taking you out for your sailing experience.
