The RYA Day Skipper Practical Course is a five-day hands-on sailing course designed to equip you with practical navigation knowledge. After completing this training, you will have the necessary skills and confidently skipper a cruising yacht by day.
Our experienced RYA instructors provide expert guidance to help strengthen your sailing skills and make the transition from competent crew member to confident skipper.
The RYA Day Skipper Practical equips you to skipper a yacht by day in familiar waters. You’ll develop basic sailing, boat handling techniques, planning and seamanship abilities. You will also have the opportunity to prepare for real-world situations aboard our modern Jeanneau yachts.
Following the five-day course, you'll gain hands-on experience in deck work and onboard management to skipper under sail and power on short passages. You can also choose to complete this day skipper practical sailing course over 2 consecutive weekends (2 days + 3 days), subject to availability.
The course elements include:
Meteorology essentials
Engine checking
Passage planning and navigation
Preparing the yacht for sea
Rules of the road and international regulations for preventing collisions at sea
Minimum pre-course experience required includes:
RYA Competent Crew course certificate or at least five days of sailing and living on board
100 miles logged
Around four hours of night sailing
You’ll also need to have completed your RYA Day Skipper Theory Course or hold equivalent navigation knowledge before taking your practical.
If you’re unsure whether your skills meet the requirements, our Yacht Refresher Courses are a great way to build your practical experience before starting.
The RYA Day Skipper or International Certificate (ICC) are often required for chartering overseas destinations, such as Greece, Spain, Turkey, Croatia and Italy. The RYA Day Skipper qualification can be converted into an ICC directly with the RYA.
